Lottie's journey began in 2017 when engineers Brandon Withrow (iOS), Gabriel Peal (Android), and Leland Richardson (React Native) worked together with lead animator Salih Abdul-Karim at Airbnb to create the first libraries that could render animations on different platforms. Since then, other companies have also contributed to its development.

Torrisi released a renderer for the format in 2019, along with a JavaScript-based player for modern browsers. This implementation supports some but not all of the features of After Effects' internal format. The different player implementations have varying trade-offs between CPU, GPU, and memory usage, making them suitable for specific use cases.

One of Lottie's key advantages is its ability to be programmed and interactive, allowing it to include raster graphic elements. It is also intended as a lighter alternative to animated GIFs and APNG files, making it ideal for use in web, mobile, and desktop applications. As a vector-based format, Lottie is independent of device resolution.

Lottie files are based on JSON but use keys with lengths of 1-2 characters and are not human-readable. Despite this, the format has gained popularity due to its ability to render high-quality animations on various platforms. The name 'Lottie' is derived from Charlotte 'Lotte' Reiniger, a German pioneer of silhouette animation.
